Memorial Services That Honor Every Life

Spiritual and secular funeral and remembrance officiant services for Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, & surrounding areas.

Heartfelt, led by Rev. Debra Brazzel, an experienced funeral officiant and celebrant, specializes in creating personalized remembrance services that honor the unique journey of each individual. With over two decades of experience, Rev. Brazzel has officiated ceremonies ranging from intimate graveside services to state funerals with full honors.

Heartfelt is committed to crafting ceremonies that reflect the personal beliefs and values of the departed and their loved ones. Drawing from both traditional and contemporary practices, Rev. Brazzel collaborates closely with families to ensure each service is meaningful and unique.

Whether in grand venues like Duke Chapel, where she is a registered officiant and former Associate Dean, or in the intimacy of a family home, Heartfelt provides services that resonate with authenticity and respect.

Services

Funeral & Remembrance Services

Funerals and memorials are crafted to reflect the life being honored. My role is to listen first, then shape a service—faith-based, spiritual, or purely secular—that speaks to your family's values and stories. Scripture, poetry, silence, or song can be woven together so the farewell feels authentic, personal, and respectful.

Grief Support

Offering caring, non-clinical support, I listen deeply as you share your story, creating a safe, nonjudgmental space to talk through grief and unresolved feelings, whether about the person who died or someone else entirely. Though not a licensed therapist, my pastoral experience lets me walk beside you with calm, clarity, and respect during a difficult time.

End-of-Life Conversations

In my service as a chaplain, I have had the privilege of supporting individuals at the end of life, helping them find peace during the transition. It has been an honor to walk alongside patients and their loved ones, offering comfort, compassion, and a steady presence during life's final chapter.

While some may shy away from this profound part of life's journey, I have felt called to embrace and continue this meaningful work. I cherish the conversations I have with families, which often span the full spectrum of emotions—from the deep sorrow of loss to the laughter that comes with celebrating a cherished life. I believe every life is unique and deserves a remembrance that honors both the grief of their passing and the immense joy they brought to those who knew them.

Rev. Brazzel has performed funeral and celebrations of life in partnership with:

  • Duke Chapel
  • Renaissance Funeral Homes
  • Oakwood Cemetery
  • Hall-Wynne Funeral Homes
  • Bluestem Conservation Cemetery
  • and many private settings

I have been an ordained United Methodist minister for more than 25 years. In ministry, I have learned the power of ritual and worship to create meaning and community. Most of my ministry has been in multi-faith settings. As a campus minister with the Greater Dallas Community of Churches and as Director of Religious Life for Duke University, I learned to be respectful and appreciative of people from many different religious backgrounds while honoring my own Christian tradition. I am nonjudgmental and accepting of others. I believe that God can be found in any moment and in any person.

As Associate Dean at Duke Chapel, I helped plan and lead hundreds of worship services—from intimate candlelit vespers services for fifty, to official Duke University events for two thousand. I officiated at simple graveside services and presided over state funerals with full processional, recessional, honor guard, and visiting dignitaries. For more than a decade, I taught worship classes at Duke Divinity School to hundreds of ministers. I am knowledgeable about tradition and ritual and liturgy. I draw from the old and the new to create unique and meaningful worship.

My service as a certified hospital chaplain at the Durham VA Medical Center and UNC Rex Hospital deepened my ability to guide patients and families through grief and end-of-life conversations with deep respect for their beliefs and traditions—always prioritizing comfort and presence over persuasion.

Drawing upon my inclusive background I am also fully able and honored to lead non-religious or spiritual-but-not-religious services, thoughtfully shaped around the values, stories, and memories that matter most to each family. Whether religious, spiritual, or secular in nature, I believe every life deserves a meaningful and respectful farewell.
